In partnership with The School of Arts and Culture, PRNS and the City of San José, Dr. Grace Carroll (Akira Book Club) and Jonathan Borca proudly presents A Little T.L.C. (Tools, Learning, and Care), a FREE literacy event and live concert held at La Plaza. This event aims to promote literacy in young children using the arts, music, animations, and hands-on activities.

Free 'literacy care packages' will be provided for the first 100 attendees, containing materials from authors and illustrators of color.

PROGRAM

12pm - 3pm: Doors open @ 12pm. Literacy care package giveaway (first 100 families), local vendors, activity stations, Read-A-Loud Circles

3pm - 6:30pm: A donation-based concert will feature local musicians, poets, and talent.

ABOUT THE ORGANIZERS

Dr. Carroll served 10 years as the Director for African American Student Development at CAL and 3 years as the Associate Director of the Center for Research on the Education of Students Placed at Risk (CRESPAR) at Howard University. She is currently the CEO of Wordsmith Jr, LLC, focused on facilitating literacy among young children, particularly African American.Blub. (https://akirasbookclub.net/)

Jonathan Borca is an advocate, storyteller, and performing artist who currently serves as the Director of Strategic Partnerships for SOAC. Raised in Eastside San Jose, Borca has over a decade of experience developing and scaling programs for nonprofits and public entities. For SOAC, Borca leads all efforts for the “California Arts Council Administrators of Color Fellowship” (CAC ACF); a statewide initiative aiming to uplift an inclusive workforce. Dr. Carroll and Jonathan Borca’s collaboration focuses on getting children (and their families) to promote community literacy.
